GREEK MARKET |
The Greek power generating industry, represents a prime market for the application by Lion Energy of the NOx and SO2 abatement technology, since it is based mainly on lignite fired power units (coal is blended with lignite to increase the heating value of lignite) and to a smaller extent by oil fired and hydro generation. Only a small percentage of electricity is currently coming from renewable forms (mainly wind energy) and imports from neighboring power systems.
The environment is a priority for the Greek utility (PPC) which is committed to pursue a variety of measures to ensure standards set by the Greek State and the European Union. For the protection of the environment the Greek State has decreed laws, ministry decisions and rules including law 1360/1976, the Presidential Executive Order 1180/1981, and law 1650/86 about the "Environmental Protection", which forms the basis of the active legislation frame.
For the harmonization with the European Community order 88/609/EEC concerning the emission limitations the Greek State has execute the Minister decision 58751/2370/15.4.93 including the limits of the main pollutants from electric power units. Regulations related to the environment are expected to tighten further requiring reduced emissions and increased levels of control in the electricity sector.
Presently the utility has under way specific projects for reducing SO2 emissions for the Megalopoly power plant in Southern Greece while new electric precipitator filters are installed to the lignite power units of northern Greece.
The exact income to be generated from sales of HNO3 and SO2 following the installation by Lion Energy of the abatement installation depends on the specific parameters of each power plant and the content of exhaust gases. (see as an example excerpts from a study done for a 600MW unit). In the U.S. market, there is an additional source of revenues by selling allowances on an emissions allowances trading market.
